Day of Mourning

Genre: Death Metal Hardcore/Metalcore
FFO: Ringworm, Integrity, Pulling Teeth, Hatebreed, A389 Records

Day of Mourning are super heavy. They were around in the late 90s in Canada and are another example of just how accurately Canada hit the nail on the head in regards to producing quality Metalcore. Most people these days cringe when they hear the word ‘Deathcore’ but i feel like it describes Day of Mourning in the literal sense, they were initially a Death Metal influenced Hardcore band, who completely took the best of both genres to make some of the most evil music in the genre. Don’t give this band a miss if you like heavy music.

Hygiene

Genre: Powerviolence / Fastcore / Punk
FFO: Infest / Crossed Out / Extortion

Last night I took a night off from exam revision and rode down to a house show to see a few bands. Among them was a somewhat new band from our lovely capital, Hygiene. Hygiene are a four-piece punk band who play fast, loud, aggressive powerviolence in the vain of Infest. I arrived just as they were starting their set and was quickly impressed - while I couldn’t see anything amidst the smoke machine and poor lighting - these guys really knew what they were doing. Unlike most new bands playing this style of music they actually had catchy, innovative riffs that made me want to punch myself in the face. They played one of the best covers I’ve heard all year (Crossed Off - Crutch) and are all serious qts. They have a 9-track demo which is lots of fun and comes on a cute 3” CD. Head over to their Bandcamp and pick it up. A+, Canberra.

P.S. If you live in Sydney they are playing at Blackwire tomorrow! Go and check them out. They are playing with Black Coffee (members from Hard Luck / Faux Hawks etc) who also played a tight set yesterday.

Shores

Genre: Slowcore / Indie / Emo
FFO: Codeine / C-Clamp / Seam / Low

Shores are four-piece from Michigan who play slowcore / sadcore in the vein of such pivotal acts as Codeine and Low. I just noticed a review on Elementary Revolt and I feel like no matter what I say it is going to look like I am biting them. Oh, the pain. I am going to posit that the singer is of Polish origin and listened to sad music in the 90’s and post-rock in the 00’s. This is one of the more refreshing slowcore releases I’ve had the pleasure of listening to in a while; you should listen to it too. They are on tour in the U.S. (jerks!) and you can buy the their new LP, Leavening, from No Idea. Despite only forming in 2010, they have a heap of earlier releases which are all available on their Bandcamp. I am so sorry for writing this mediocre chunk of text.

Self-Corruption

grindcore / grindcore / grindcore

FFO: Pig Destroyer etc.

Self-Corruption is a grindcore project I play guitar for with my friend TB (who is the vocalist). We just released History of Clowns a number of days ago, and it consists of 12 songs in just under 14 minutes. It’s loud, fast, (mainly) short-song, bass-less grindcore with other elements scattered throughout. Surprisingly, the lyrics are about stickin’ it to the man and how the world sucks. Also, the cover art is done by Tom, one of the main posters here on DA. An earlier demo is also available, but that is entirely the work of TB, and has a much rawer sound than the album (it still rules, however). Anyway, I’ll stop spruiking. Go listen to it and chuck a bedroom mosh.

Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate) - New Splits

Genre: Indie / Emo / Math
FFO: Mineral / Colossal / Joie De Vivre

So, at the end of last week pre-orders for two new Empire! Empire! splits came out. One of them is with an Austrian band called Rika. They play classic 90’s emo in the vein of Mineral and Sunny Day Real Estate, and they do this very well. Absolutely delightful sad jams. The 7” has been released by two labels; Count Your Lucky Stars in the US and Goddamn Records over on the continent. The other split is with a band from our homeland, Arrows. Similarly, this one has also been released on two labels; Count Your Lucky Stars again and Hobbledehoy in Australia. For me, as for any fan of E!E!, hearing some new songs makes everything feel a lot better. All of the songs on both of the splits are absolute quality. Everything Keith touches turns to gold. Go and pre-order these splits right now before they all run out!
